The Lions have started free agency with an interesting path which they have signed
Marcus Davenport DE
Amik Robertson DB
They also traded for:
Carlton Davis CB
Let's break down each player the Lions have currently acquired.
Marcus Davenport: Davenport was signed to a 1 year 10 million dollar deal with a base of $6 million. The first thing to mention is Davenport, a former first-round pick, as the Saints drafted him at pick 14. He has always had good potential even earning a 9+ RAS score
Davenport did showcase his potential in his time with the Saints in 2021 he had 9 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. Despite being in a rotation his rookie and sophomore season Davenport had 4.5 sacks his rookie season and 6 in his sophomore season. After 2021 he had an odd slump he had 0.5 sacks in 15 games but also had over a 12% pass rush win rate which for comparison is a better pass rush win rate than new signed Viking Jonathan Greenard. He then signed with the Vikings and started the season pretty good with 2 sacks in 4 games but then got hurt and missed the rest of the season. Davenport is one of Holmes low-risk high-reward signings that Brad Holmes loves to make every year. Marcus Davenport Highlights 🔥 - Welcome to the Detroit Lions (youtube.com) if you watched his highlights you see a lot of potential. You can see he has good length, burst, and power. Davenport is likely going to compete with 2022 2nd-round draft pick Josh Paschal for the starting job. The only concern with Davenport is his injury history. The question is if he can overcome those injuries.
Carlton Davis: I am a fan of Carlton Davis he is an elite CB2 who can play CB1 and do an admirable job at it. Davis has 3 ints in the last two seasons. Davis allowed 0 touchdowns in man coverage. He also shut down Jamar Chase and Chase called Davis the best CB he has ever faced. In two games against the Lions this season he allowed 29 yards the Lions clearly had a first-hand look at Davis and liked what they saw. Davis also has experience playing and winning a Super Bowl. The Lions have wanted a good CB core for some time and they got an upgrade with Davis who also is good against the run having two seasons in a row with 50+ tackles.
Amik Robertson CB: Robertson is a better version of Will Harris. When I mean he is better I mean he is good. According to PFF Robertson on 64 targets only allowed 19 first downs and only allowed 3 touchdowns and had 2 ints and 7 PDs with a 85.6 rating to boot. Robertson can play both outside and in the slot. He also has a low missed tackle rate at 9% last year and only 7 missed tackles in total. The Lions get a versatile backup who can give you reliable production. Truly an A-grade signing and he is on a two-year deal. Lions fans are going to like Robertson on the team.
